After this page, you can recognize the 대(大) root and guess the meaning of new words built from it.

10-second answer

The short answer

대 (dae) comes from 大, meaning "big" or "great." It's everywhere: 대학교 (daehakgyo, university, literally "big school"), 대통령 (daetongnyeong, president, "big leader"), 확대 (hwakdae, enlargement/expansion), and the slang exclamation 대박 (daebak, "jackpot," literally "big gourd" — used for anything amazing or shocking). Its mirror image is 소(小) (so), "small," and the two roots form the same kind of high/low decoding pair as 고(高) (go) and 저(低) (jeo).

Quick check — did that land?

  1. 1. What does 대학교 literally break down to?

대박! You already know this word, but do you see 대?

Words Built on 대(大)

WordBreakdownMeaning
대학교 (daehakgyo)대(big) + 학(study) + 교(school)University — literally "big school," vs 학교 (school) alone
대통령 (daetongnyeong)대(big) + 통령(commander)President
확대 (hwakdae)확(spread) + 대(big)Enlargement, expansion — 사진 확대 (enlarge a photo)
대단하다 (daedanhada)대(big) + 단(端, end/extremity) + 하다Amazing, impressive, incredible
대박 (daebak)대(big) + 박(gourd)"Jackpot" / "no way!" — the all-purpose exclamation for anything huge or shocking
대회 (daehoe)대(big) + 회(gathering)A competition, tournament, or contest
최대 (choedae)최(most) + 대(big)The maximum, the largest
확대경 (hwakdaegyeong)확대(enlarge) + 경(lens)Magnifying glass
대도시 (daedosi)대(big) + 도시(city)A major city, metropolis
대박나다 (daebangnada)대박(jackpot) + 나다(occur)To hit it big — a business or show "blowing up"

대박 isn't literal anymore

대박's literal meaning ("big gourd") is basically forgotten — today it's a pure interjection, closer to "whoa" or "no way" than anything about size. Context, not the root, tells you which.

대박 has a full page of its own: 대박 (daebak) — and 헐 vs 대박 compares it with the other shock word.

대 vs 소 — The Same Pair, Flipped

대 (big)소 (small)Where you'll see it
대도시 (big city)소도시 (small city)News, real estate listings
확대 (enlarge)축소 (shrink) — 소 root, different pairing wordPhoto editing, printing settings
대기업 (big company)중소기업 (small/medium company)Job listings, business news
최대 (maximum)최소 (minimum)Settings, specifications, requirements

See 소(小) for the small side of the pair. Once 대 and 소 are automatic, business news, product specs, and job postings stop being unknown syllables and start reading as "big X" / "small X" — the same trick that works for 고(高)/저(低).

Quick Examples

이번 시험 진짜 대박이야, 다 맞았어!

ibeon siheom jinjja daebagiya, da majasseo!

This test result is unreal — I got everything right!

대박 as a pure exclamation, no literal "big" meaning left.

이 사진 좀 확대해 줄 수 있어요?

i sajin jom hwakdaehae jul su isseoyo?

Can you enlarge this photo a bit?

확대하다 — the verb form, common with photos, text, and screens.

저는 서울대학교에 다녀요.

jeoneun seouldaehakgyoe danyeoyo.

I go to Seoul National University.

대학교 vs 학교 — always specify 대학교 for university, not just 학교.

Common Mistakes

Mistake #1 — Saying 학교 when you mean university

학교 alone defaults to school in general (often elementary/middle/high school in context). Say 대학교 for university.

Mistake #2 — Translating 대박 literally

대박 doesn't mean "big gourd" to a modern speaker — treat it purely as an interjection like "whoa" or "no way."
