After this page, you can cheer someone on with 화이팅 (hwaiting), and save 행운을 빌어요 for moments that really come down to luck.

10-second answer

How do you say how to say good luck in Korean?

The word Koreans actually shout is 화이팅 (hwaiting, "fighting!") — an energetic cheer for effort, not literal luck. The direct "good luck" translation, 행운을 빌어요 (haenguneul bireoyo), exists but sounds more formal and literary — save it for wishes tied to chance (a lottery, an interview outcome) rather than everyday encouragement.

Quick check — did that land?

  1. 1. Which phrase would a Korean actually shout before a friend's exam?

Don’t always say 행운을 빌어요. There are natural ways to cheer someone on.

The Full Spectrum

PhraseFormality / ToneWhen to use
행운을 빕니다 (haenguneul bimnida)Formal, literary"I wish you good luck" — writing, speeches, or wishing well on an outcome involving chance
행운을 빌어요 (haenguneul bireoyo)Polite-casualThe same wish, softened to spoken 해요체 — texts to acquaintances or coworkers
잘될 거예요 (jaldoel geoyeyo)Polite, reassuring"It'll go well" — comforting someone nervous before an exam, interview, or event
화이팅! (hwaiting!)Casual, universalThe all-purpose cheer of encouragement — shouted before exams, games, performances, anything
잘해! (jalhae!)Casual (반말)"Do well!" to a close friend right before they start something — short and energetic

The One Rule That Matters Most

행운 ("luck/fortune") implies chance is involved — a raffle, a coin flip, an unpredictable outcome. For effort-based situations like exams, interviews, or games, 화이팅 is the native choice, because it cheers on the person's effort rather than wishing for random luck. Mixing these up is the single biggest tell of a non-native speaker.

Quick Examples

시험 화이팅!

siheom hwaiting!

Good luck on the exam!

시험 ("exam") + 화이팅 — the standard way to cheer someone on before a test.

너무 걱정하지 마, 잘될 거야.

neomu geokjeonghaji ma, jaldoel geoya.

Don't worry too much, it'll go well.

Casual 반말 reassurance, common right before someone's interview or performance.

Good Luck by Situation: Exam, Interview, Trip

The literal way to say good luck in Korean is 행운을 빌어요 (haenguneul bireoyo, "I wish you luck"), but in day-to-day speech Koreans usually name the event and wish that it goes well. The pattern is [event] + 잘 + verb, and only the ending changes with politeness:

SituationCasual (반말)Polite
An exam시험 잘 봐! (siheom jal bwa!)시험 잘 보세요. (siheom jal boseyo.)
A job interview면접 잘 봐! (myeonjeop jal bwa!)면접 잘 보세요. (myeonjeop jal boseyo.)
A presentation발표 잘해! (balpyo jalhae!)발표 잘하세요. (balpyo jalhaseyo.)
A trip잘 다녀와! (jal danyeowa!)잘 다녀오세요. (jal danyeooseyo.)
A new shop or business대박 나! (daebak na!)대박 나세요! (daebak naseyo!)
Waiting for results좋은 결과 있을 거야. (joeun gyeolgwa isseul geoya.)좋은 결과 있기를 바랍니다. (joeun gyeolgwa itgireul baramnida.)

Any of these can be finished with 화이팅, and native speakers treat 화이팅, 힘내, 잘할 수 있어 (you can do it) and 응원할게 (I'm rooting for you) as interchangeable — there's no wrong pick among those four. The business wish uses 대박 in its original sense of a big success, and a trip wish sits close to take care. Once the event is over, switch to 수고했어 — "you worked hard."

Exam-season luck

Before a big exam, Koreans avoid 미역국 (seaweed soup): 미역국을 먹다 is a dictionary idiom for failing an exam. Friends give sticky 엿 (yeot, taffy) or 찹쌀떡 (chapssaltteok, rice cakes) instead, because 붙다 means both "to stick" and "to pass an exam."

Common Mistakes

Mistake #1 — Saying 행운을 빌어요 before an exam

It's understood but sounds oddly formal/literary for an effort-based event — 화이팅 is what Koreans actually say.

Mistake #2 — Assuming 화이팅 always means "good luck"

화이팅 is a general cheer of encouragement (like "you've got this!") — it also gets used for celebration, team spirit, and casual pep talks with no luck involved at all.
