After this page, you can ask why and what with 왜 (wae) and 뭐 (mwo), and hear how tone changes both.

10-second answer

What does Wae and Mwo mean?

왜 (wae) means "why," and 뭐 (mwo) means "what" — two of the most frequently used words in casual Korean conversation. Both can stand completely alone as a one-word question, and both shift meaning heavily based on tone, from genuinely curious to sharp and confrontational.

Quick check — did that land?

  1. 1. What's the polite version of a bare 왜?

왜? and 뭐? look easy, right?

Quick Examples

왜?

wae?

Why?

A complete question on its own.

뭐 해?

mwo hae?

What are you doing?

One of the most common casual openers in texting.

뭐라고?

mworago?

What did you say?

뭐 + 라고 — asking someone to repeat themselves, can sound sharp depending on tone.

A note on spelling. The official romanizations are wae and mwo, but you'll also see 왜 (wae) written weh or we, and 뭐 (mwo) written mwoh or mweo. They're all the same words.

Tone Changes Everything

Tone왜? feels like뭐? feels like
Soft, curious"Why? (genuinely curious)""What? (didn't catch that)"
Flat, clipped"Why?" (mildly annoyed/defensive)"What?" (a bit confrontational)
Sharp, drawn out"Why?!" (upset, challenging)"What?!" (offended, challenging)

This is exactly why K-drama conflict scenes so often hinge on a single 왜? or 뭐? — the SAME word can be a gentle check-in or a direct challenge, purely through delivery.

뭐 as an Intensifier/Filler

뭐 also shows up as a casual filler word, similar to English "well" or "I mean" — softening or hedging a statement rather than asking anything:

뭐, 괜찮아.

mwo, gwaenchana.

Well, it's fine.

뭐 here is a casual hedge, not a question.

Common Mistakes

Mistake #1 — Using bare 왜?/뭐? upward without softening

Toward someone older or a stranger, a bare 왜?/뭐? can sound blunt or even rude. Add 요: 왜요?/뭐예요? for a safer polite version.

Mistake #2 — Missing the filler use of 뭐

Not every 뭐 is a question — hearing it as a hedge/filler at the start of a sentence avoids a confusing misread.
