누나 (nuna) means "older sister," said by a male. The Standard Korean Language Dictionary gives two senses: a male's older sister or older female relative of the same generation, such as a cousin, and an older woman a younger man is friendly with. Women never say 누나; they say 언니.

In K-drama fandom you'll see the phrase "noona romance" (누나 로맨스) — a relationship where the woman is older than the man. When a man calls his girlfriend 누나, or fans imagine an idol dating an older woman, this word carries that flavor.

But by default 누나 is not romantic — it's the everyday word for an older sister or older female friend.

Mistake #1 — Female fans calling a female idol 누나
Female speakers say 언니. 누나 from a woman sounds unnatural.
Mistake #2 — "누나 means girlfriend"
Like 오빠, it's a relationship word, not a romance word. A girlfriend who is older may be called 누나, but 누나 itself just means a close older female (from a male speaker).
Mistake #3 — Calling a much older woman 누나
누나 implies closeness and a modest age gap. A middle-aged stranger would be addressed differently (저기요, or contextual titles).
