언니 (Unnie) vs 누나 (Noona): What's the Difference?

Written and reviewed by Jun and Jin, native Korean speakers

Published · How we write & review

After this page, you can pick 언니 (unnie) or 누나 (noona) instantly by asking one question: is the speaker a woman or a man?.

10-second answer

The short answer

언니 (eonni, unnie) and 누나 (nuna, noona) both mean an older female you're close to; the difference is who is speaking. A female speaker says 언니 (eonni), a male speaker says 누나 (nuna). The same split applies to older males: females say 오빠 (oppa), males say 형 (hyung).

Quick check — did that land?

  1. 1. A male fan wants to address the older female idol he admires. What does he say?

언니? 누나?? You’ve heard 언니 and 누나 in Korean dramas.

The One Rule

SpeakerOlder female is called…
Female언니 (eonni)
Male누나 (nuna)

(여성) 언니, 밥 먹었어요?

eonni, bap meogeosseoyo?

(Woman) Unnie, have you eaten?

(남성) 누나, 밥 먹었어요?

nuna, bap meogeosseoyo?

(Man) Noona, have you eaten?

Identical sentence — only the speaker's gender changed the word.

A note on spelling. The official romanizations are eonni and nuna, but fans usually write unnie and noona, and you'll also see onni or unni. They're all the same two words.

Same Person, Two Names

A female fan calls the idol IU "아이유 언니"; a male fan calls her "아이유 누나." Siblings do the same with their own older sister — the younger sister says 언니, the younger brother says 누나.

Nuance Differences Worth Knowing

  • 언니 has an extra colloquial use: women addressing female staff at shops and salons, regardless of actual age.
  • 누나 carries the "noona romance" flavor in dramas — an older woman with a younger man — though by default it is not romantic.
  • Both words imply closeness; neither is for female strangers (저기요 is the neutral call).

How Do You Know Who's "Older"?

Korea officially switched to international age (만 나이) in June 2023 — but deciding who's the 언니/누나 in a friendship still runs on the older, customary way of comparing seniority, usually by birth year (몇 년생이세요?) rather than the legal current age. That gap between the legal number and the social habit is exactly why this address-term system is still so alive — see the Korean age system page for the full explanation.
